SCBA Corridor Connection: May 2009

May 1, 2009

Updated Scorecards on Negative Use Businesses in the Stemmons Corridor Now Available on SCBA Website.

It is no surprise that criminal activities continue to occur at sexually oriented businesses (SOBs) in the Stemmons Corridor. Offenses include public lewdness, prostitution, burglary of motor vehicles and sale of alcohol without a permit, just to name a few. Currently State Representative Jim Jackson has authored several bills to increase enforcement of illegal activities at SOBs. SCBA strongly supports these bills, co-authored by Representative Rafael Anchia, which help in mitigating the growth of SOBs in the Corridor.

To learn more about these bills please visit the Texas Legislature Online and search for the following related house bills: HB 1034, HB 206, HB 123, HB 124

Volunteers Needed to Greet our U.S. Troops at DFW Airport

For the past several years SCBA has volunteered during a one week period to meet and greet our U.S. troops who are coming home for a two week R&R (Rest and Recuperation). Each morning (flights normally arrive between 7:00 and 9:00am) during the week of May 18th through the 24th we will have volunteers at DFW. If your organization is interested in volunteering in support of our troops please contact Gabriela Gilmore at (214) 800-8771 or for more information.

Hotel Debate Draws a Crowd

As a business advocacy group, SCBA works to educate members about issues that potentially impact the thousands of businesses located in the Stemmons Corridor. On May 1, 2009 SCBA held a debate on the Dallas Convention Center Hotel. Over 200 SCBA members and guests gathered at the Renaissance Dallas Hotel to hear Mayor Tom Leppert and Anne Raymond, Citizens Against a Taxpayer-Owned Hotel, present their case on why Dallas should or should not move forward with this Convention Center Hotel. This was the last formal opportunity to hear both sides before voters headed to the polls for the May 9th election. SCBA would like to thank SCBA Board Member and General Manager, Tim Sullivan, of the Renaissance Dallas Hotel for hosting our event.
